Robert E. Cleaves, IV
Robert Cleaves is President and COO of Environmental Solutions Group Capital (ESG), a Maine-based firm that specializes in early stage investments and consulting services in the renewable energy, environmental, and “eco-asset” trading sectors.
ESG has engineered complex banking and trading opportunities for numerous Fortune 500 companies, offering unique ways to monetize “credits” created through various regulatory programs including wetlands banking, renewable energy credits, emission reduction and greenhouse gas credits, and Section 29 and 45 Production Tax Credits under the Internal Revenue Code.
Mr. Cleaves has worked with numerous companies pursuing similar innovative business initiatives, including Wheelabrator/Waste Management, Birmingham Steel, Northeast Utilities, and Duke Energy. On behalf of the Federal Aviation Administration, Mr. Cleaves executed the first “trade” of wetlands credits ever undertaken in New England. He also designed the first liability transfer under the federal Superfund statute, a deal hailed by then Administrator Carol Browner as “good old fashioned American ingenuity.”
Previously, Mr. Cleaves was a Partner at Verrill & Dana, where he chaired the Environmental Law Group, and a Federal Prosecutor in the Department of Justice Land and Natural Resources Division.
Mr. Cleaves holds a BA from Wesleyan University, and a JD from Boston College Law School.
Kevin Dutt
Kevin Dutt is the President of KCD Solutions, LLC, a management consulting group that improves the operations of small, privately owned manufacturing and service organizations through systemic change. Prior to founding KCD Solutions in 2002, Mr. Dutt spent ten years improving the operations of top global corporations including AMP, International Paper, and Bayer through product design systems, workforce and process optimization, performance metrics, and employee incentive program development. He has a proven track record in product design and has developed numerous patents. Mr. Dutt has an MBA from Boston University with a focus on operations and quantitative methods and a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Princeton University.
Ralph Earle
Mr. Earle is the founder of the Assabet Group, a consulting firm working with market leading organizations to catalyze superior environmental and financial performance. Mr. Earle has created innovative and business-based solutions to environmental problems for over a decade. He is the author of numerous papers and speeches on environmental strategy, the link between environmental performance and shareholder value, environmental management, recycling, life cycle analysis and solid waste management.
Prior to the Assabet Group, Mr. Earle was the founding Director of the Alliance for Environmental Innovation, a project of the Environmental Defense Fund and The Pew Charitable Trusts. There, he established the Alliance as one of the preeminent business/NGO environmental partnership organizations in the country. The Alliance’s projects with SC Johnson, Starbucks and United Parcel Service have been widely hailed as an example of positive environmental change.
Prior to the Alliance, Mr. Earle spearheaded Arthur D. Little’s Competitive Environmental Strategy practice, a consulting methodology designed to help corporations integrate environmental considerations into their long-term decision making. Mr. Earle implemented this methodology inside corporations both large and small and in industries from chemicals to consumer products. Also at Arthur D. Little, he managed an $8.5 million environmental auditing contract for the Department of Energy and led numerous projects in green marketing, environmental management systems assessments, and environmental business opportunities. An associate director in the firm, he was the recipient of Arthur D. Little awards for Innovation (twice), Staff Development and Marketing.
Mr. Earle also served as Assistant Secretary of Environmental Affairs for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. There he was responsible for setting and managing state policy in the areas of solid waste disposal and recycling. He managed the issuance of the state’s first ten-year Solid Waste Master Plan, negotiated voluntary recycled paper purchase agreements with the state’s newspaper publishers, and supervised five operating agencies in their solid waste and recycling policy making activities. Mr. Earle also worked for two years as the Director of Market Development for Recycled Materials.
Mr. Earle serves on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Sustainable Product Design, and on the Boards of Directors of the Environmental League of Massachusetts and the Dimock Community Health Center. He holds an MBA from the Yale School of Management and a BA, cum laude, from Harvard College.

Gib Hedstrom has 25 years of experience advising CEOs and board members about how to handle the toughest environmental issues of the day. Schooled in finance at GE, Mr. Hedstrom spent 20 years at Arthur D. Little, leading significant aspects of ADL's environmental auditing, strategy, and governance work. He was elected a Vice President of the firm in 1989.
Mr. Hedstrom has reported to outside boards of directors of Fortune 500 companies on over 50 occasions regarding environmental governance, emerging issues, sustainable development, and audit program oversight.
Following the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio to 2001, Mr. Hedstrom led ADL's worldwide Sustainable Development team. During this time, Mr. Hedstrom also managed ADL's EHS activities throughout Europe and Asia. From 2001 to 2003, he was a partner with PA Consulting Group (largest consulting firm in the U.K.), leading the firm's corporate environmental and sustainable development practice.
John G. Palfrey
John Palfrey is Executive Director of The Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard Law School. He is responsible for managing the center's operations and finance, overseeing the Center’s staff, fellows and students, and working with the faculty directors to set and carry out the Center’s agenda. Mr. Palfrey also teaches courses at Harvard Law School and Harvard Extension School.
Before joining the Berkman Center, Mr. Palfrey was an attorney with Ropes & Gray in Boston, where he focused on intellectual property, Internet law, and private equity transactions. Previously, he co-founded and served as an officer of Analine Technologies, a leading web-based hazardous waste software company. Earlier in his career, Mr. Palfrey was a Special Assistant at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency during the Clinton administration. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Charles River Watershed Association.
Mr. Palfrey is a graduate of Harvard College, the University of Cambridge, and Harvard Law School, where he was an editor of the Harvard Environmental Law Review. He is a member of the New York and Massachusetts bars. His awards include the Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholar to the University of Cambridge and the U.S. EPA Gold Medal (highest national award).
